We’re often asked what is considered a dental emergency and when should you call your dentist in Richmond. Dental emergencies include:

• A constant throbbing toothache
• Severe discomfort when biting or eating
• Broken fillings
• Tooth or gum infections such as an abscess
• Chipped or broken teeth
• Pain when drinking hot or cold beverages
• Fillings that have fallen out

No-one should have to suffer tooth pain or discomfort. The sooner you visit our emergency dentist in Richmond, the more treatment options there will be and the lower the cost is likely to be.

Dental First Aid

Don’t assume that you’re fine after taking a hard knock to the teeth. It’s best to get checked out rather than risk future injury from unseen damage. However, there are some situations where you can tell you need attention right away.

The important thing in these cases is not to delay. Time is critical. Keep calm and follow the following emergency dental procedures.
  • Knocked Out Tooth
    • If you have knocked out a tooth, it might not be lost.
    • First, find the missing tooth. Pick it up only by the crown, not the root.
    • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it in milk, but don't scrub it.
    • Place the tooth back in position, making sure it’s oriented the right way. However, don't put baby teeth back in. If you can't get it back in, soak the tooth in milk or saliva as you transport it to the dentist
    • If you do get the tooth in, bite down gently to hold it in place, using a cloth, tissue, or mouthguard if you have one.
  • Chipped or Cracked Tooth
    • Get all the pieces of the tooth out of the mouth--you don't want to swallow them.
    • Draw air in over your teeth. If this causes sharp pain, treat it as a dental emergency. Gently feel the tooth with your tongue. If it’s loose, treat it as a dental emergency.  If not, make a dental appointment at your earliest convenience, but watch out for complications to arise and treat them seriously.
If you’ve damaged a tooth or you’re suffering discomfort please phone our emergency dentist in Richmond right away. Call on (02) 4501 7930 and we’ll try to get you in as soon as possible.
