WISDOM TEETH EXTRACTION

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

We are now offering wisdom tooth removal with a visiting oral surgeon in our practice.

Normally, we want to preserve all your natural teeth. But sometimes, there are teeth that can cause trouble. Wisdom teeth can be difficult because when they come in they can lead to significant problems with your oral health. We can usually tell when wisdom teeth are going to cause problems and recommend removing them before they have emerged. Removing wisdom teeth early can prevent complications of the procedure and from the teeth themselves.

If you or your child needs to have wisdom teeth extracted in Hawkesbury, please call (02) 4501 7930 or book an appointment today with a dentist at Riverlands Dental in North Richmond.

Complications of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, called third molars by dentists, can cause problems because the jaw often doesn't grow large enough to accommodate them. When wisdom teeth come in without adequate room, it can lead to:
  • Crowding and Misalignment of Other Teeth
  • Wisdom Teeth Trapped in Gums or in Bone
  • Bite Problems
  • Damage to Second Molars
  • Infection
  • Hygiene Challenges
As wisdom teeth try to push their way into position, they can push up against your other teeth, creating room for themselves by crowding your other teeth.

When wisdom teeth have difficulty emerging, they become trapped in the gums or bone, what we call “impacted.” These partially emergent teeth can get infected or develop into tumors. As your teeth shift and wisdom teeth only partly emerge, you can develop bite problems, such as TMJ.

As they try to force their way out, third molars can also damage your second molars. Even when they emerge fully, third molars are hard to clean and prone to gum disease and cavities. Partially emerged wisdom teeth can be a serious risk for gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Does Everyone Need to Have Their Wisdom Teeth Removed?

No. If wisdom teeth have room and are going to come in without problems, they do not need to be removed. However, these days most people will likely benefit.

  • Why Doesn’t My Jaw Have Room for Wisdom Teeth?

The jaw develops partly in response to chewing. Anthropologists think that early humans spent perhaps half of their waking hours chewing. Modern cooking and processing means we chew a lot less, which means our jaws also don't grow as large.

Sooner Might Be Better for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Problem wisdom teeth can be easier to deal with if we take care of them sooner. When we extract wisdom teeth before they become problems, we can:
  • Avoid Wisdom Tooth Complications
  • Schedule Your Procedure at Your Convenience
  • Reduce Discomfort from Procedure
  • Control Surgical Risks
The longer we wait to remove problem wisdom teeth, the more likely they are to cause complications. And when you have complications, the procedure might need to be done quickly. That can mean scheduling an urgent procedure at an inconvenient time. Wisdom teeth are often easiest to remove early. This means the procedure might result in less discomfort and may have fewer risks.
